From Stadium Roars to Second Screens: How Digital Platforms Transform Football Fandom

The digital era has brought about significant changes. For football, it has affected how fans interact with the sport and show their passion for it. It gives accessibility, but the impact is felt throughout the entire fan culture.

Champions League Garnering 23.5M Mentions Internationally

The interest in sports through social media is one of the biggest examples of how fan culture in football has changed due to digitalization. The 2024-25 UEFA Champions League went viral and set off a worldwide explosion through social media. There are 23.5 million mentions across social media between May 30 and June 1.

There are approximately 14 million unique users actively participating in this trend. It sparked conversations online, as fans celebrate, debate, and express their passion for the sport.

38% of those mentions were made during the 90 minutes of play. This is a big happening in the sporting industry, as even the 2025 Coupe de France’s final only generated slightly under 700,000 total mentions on social media. That means the Champions League received over 20 times more attention online.

This led to a surge in other online activities related to sports. Many fans bet Champions League as a way to support their team and engage more throughout the match. Not only do they bet on the outcome of the game, but they also support specific players favored to win. Sports betting sites like Sportsbet see fans coming in during the Champions League due to the hype.

The Champions League is the perfect example of how digital innovations have shaped football’s fan culture. The world sees the event as more than just a sporting event, but it has become a global storytelling moment. Fans can converse and discuss things as the game progresses. Star players will be celebrated instantly; they no longer have to wait for the media to cover the result of the games.

Social media features like comments, hashtags, quotes, and others make it easy for the stories to reach other fans almost immediately. These conversations also take place on multiple social media platforms, so all fans can engage on the app they use most often.

From Sofa to Second Screen

Sports used to be an event people watched on their couches. They need to tune in at home or other places with a television to get a glimpse of a match they’re into. However, technology made it possible for fans to keep track of their favorite sports anywhere they want.

There was a significant jump in the number of fans following sports updates on two or more screens between 2024 and 2025. That was a 2% jump, showing that more people now use multiple devices to follow content, especially for live sports updates.

It’s a topic of discussion because people now jump from one content to another quickly. Not only for entertainment, but people also do this to handle work while keeping up with entertainment at the same time. This way, right-holders have a way to serve context for live sports reports, such as player tracking, or something more in-depth like tactical reports.

Social media also makes it possible for fans across countries to interact with one another instantly. Regardless of time differences, people can still discuss on the same forum at the same time if both are online.

Despite the existence of social media, that doesn’t mean fans no longer like enjoying the sports in person. Fans still come into the stadiums, but not only to watch the sports in person. 82% of these fans will keep their phones in their hands so they can provide live content and commentary on social media.

For sports, the existence of social media and mobile tools doesn’t mean to replace traditional fan cultures. It exists to enhance fan activities and give fans more ways to engage with their favorite sports.

AI as an Assistant

Artificial Intelligence has slowly made its way into multiple industries. It makes things more instantaneous and accessible to all users, giving knowledge and assistance for various tasks.

For sports fans, AI is a tool that can benefit them in multiple ways. More than half of fans would usually utilize AI tools to keep up with sports schedules, scores, and find analysis of the match they’re interested in.

There are automated translations that fans can use to translate players’ post-match interviews. They can also watch clips that help them predict the outcome of the match or get alerts regarding the latest updates.

With algorithms tracking your preferences, everything will feel naturally comfortable to use. It will track the team you’re mostly invested in, the camera angles you mostly enjoy watching, or your peak log-in times.

However, among all the positive changes that AI has brought for sports fans, linguistic inclusivity is one of the most appreciated features. Real-time translation is a way to eliminate language barriers. Not only does it allow fans to understand almost all content, but it’ll also allow them to communicate more easily with other fans across the world.

Community Building

Digital communities have grown bigger than physical groups. Sports executives can no longer treat online communities as just a bunch of fans loving the sports together. They now need to consider these digital fan communities as the heart of their long-term strategy.

Surprisingly, more and more fans see communities as a priority for their experience. This is especially true for younger fans. They like being involved in chat rooms or platforms where they can enjoy live streams alongside other fans. Memes have also become a shared fan culture across sports and countries.

One of the reasons why community spaces are big among the younger generations is that they give them more experience than just being a fan. Instead of being active only as an audience, they’re given the chance to experience being a co-creator.

In truth, most fans won’t get the chance to watch the football in person, mostly due to geographical distance. However, digital innovations allow clubs to design a virtual space for remote fans to feel heard and seen despite not having the means to travel.

This can be in the form of reels or virtual tifos on stadium LED boards. This change shifted the mindset of organizations that used to measure success by how many seats they’re able to sell. Instead, they’ve started measuring the success of their events by shared moments online.

The Digitalization of Football Fan Culture

Digital platforms are now the center of entertainment, which is also true for football and other sports. Fans now have multiple opportunities to keep up with their favorite teams and players. Finding live broadcasts and snippets of a match isn’t hard; connecting with other fans is also easier than ever.

Still, there are several challenges that fans and players face due to digitalization. It’s easy for fans to criticize certain players when they’re showing a disappointing performance. As anyone can voice their thoughts anonymously, it’s often easier for them to speak negatively about something or someone.

On the brighter side, many other innovations have also improved the football fans’ experience. Newer cameras can deliver better moments with more angles. Fans who can’t enjoy the game live can watch highlights or a full replay of the game anytime they want.

Apps and fantasy football drive more engagement, giving fans more content to interact with at any time or to keep up with certain teams consistently. Fans no longer need to independently search for news. Apps and their notification system will do the job, so fans can stay in the loop without a hassle.
